You post a WhatsApp Status and a friend says nothing came up. Or someone mentions a status they shared this morning and your Updates tab has nothing from them. It looks like a fault, but a status has a guest list and a time limit, so a missing one is usually working as designed.
One limit first: this guide is for fixing your own settings and your own app. If someone has left you out of their status, that is their choice, and the respectful fix is to ask them. There is nothing here about seeing a status that wasn't shared with you.
Start with the symptom, because each one points somewhere different.
- One specific contact can't see your status: check the saved numbers and your Status privacy list. See causes one and two.
- Nobody seems to have seen your status: check read receipts before assuming it failed. See cause five.
- You can't see one contact's status: check 'Hidden updates', then the time limit. See causes three and four.
- You see no new statuses from anyone, or yours won't post: check your connection and app version. See cause six.
Cause 1: One of you hasn't saved the other's number
This is the classic reason, and it is easy to miss because you can chat on WhatsApp with someone whose number you never saved. Status works differently. WhatsApp's help says your status updates are shared with all your contacts by default, and that you can't set status privacy to 'Everyone' or share your status with people who don't have your number.
Read those two statements together and you get the practical rule: the poster needs the viewer in their contacts, and the viewer needs the poster's number. If you saved their number but they never saved yours, a status can fail to appear even though your chat works perfectly.
Saving a number can also go stale. WhatsApp notes that when an unknown number can view your statuses, a contact may have changed their number. It works the other way too: if a friend changed numbers and you still have the old one saved, you may not see the status they post from the new one.
- Ask the person to confirm they have your current number saved, and check that you have theirs.
- Save it in your phone's address book. WhatsApp uses that address book to check which of your contacts are on WhatsApp, so also make sure WhatsApp is allowed to use your contacts in your phone's settings.
- After saving, post a new status as a test rather than judging by an older one.
Cause 2: Status privacy settings, or a block
If the numbers are saved on both sides, check the audience. WhatsApp's status page says that when you post, you decide who can see it, and you can change this for each status. The options you will see are 'My contacts', 'My contacts except...' and 'Only share with...'.
'My contacts except...' is the one that catches people out, because you can add someone to it once and forget. 'Only share with...' is stricter: anyone not on that list won't get the status at all, so a contact you added to your phone last week isn't included until you add them. WhatsApp also notes that a person who has deleted their account may disappear from these lists.
If you are the viewer, you can't check or change someone else's list. Ask them, or accept that they may have chosen a smaller audience.
- For your default audience, open 'Settings', then 'Privacy', and choose the status option.
- For a single status, tap the 'Status (Contacts)' button while composing it, which is how WhatsApp's help describes it for text statuses. Labels can differ a little between Android, iPhone and web.
- Add or remove the person you are checking, then post a new status as a test rather than judging by one you have already posted.
- To show one status to someone outside your audience, mention them. WhatsApp allows up to 5 mentions per status, and says a mention doesn't change the audience for future updates.
- If you blocked them, unblock them first. WhatsApp says blocked users can't see your status, though they can see one posted before the block. Blocking also stops you receiving their status updates, and WhatsApp says you can't see a contact's status if they have blocked you.
Cause 3: You hid (muted) their status
If one person's updates vanished from your own Updates tab, you may have hidden them, possibly with an accidental long press. WhatsApp's current help calls this 'Hide', though older versions of the feature and many people still say 'mute'. On WhatsApp Web, the help describes these updates sitting under 'Muted', with a choice to show or hide them.
Hidden statuses aren't lost. WhatsApp says you still receive them, delivered to the 'Hidden updates' section of the Updates tab. That section won't appear if your hidden contacts haven't shared a recent status, so its absence doesn't prove that nobody is hidden.
- Open the 'Updates' tab and look for 'Hidden updates'. If you follow channels, WhatsApp says to swipe left on statuses and tap 'Hidden'.
- Tap the person's status, tap 'More', then 'Unhide', and confirm. Pressing and holding the status and tapping 'Unhide' also works.
- Hiding only affects your view. WhatsApp says hiding or unhiding someone doesn't change whether they can see your status. To stop someone seeing yours, change your status audience instead.
Cause 4: The 24 hours ran out, or it was deleted
WhatsApp says statuses disappear from view after 24 hours. If a friend tells you about a status from yesterday, it may simply have expired before you opened the app. There is no way to reopen it from the Updates tab once that window has passed.
The poster may also have removed it. WhatsApp says you can't edit a status, only delete it and share a new one, so a status that was there and then vanished may have been deleted to fix a typo. WhatsApp adds that a contact with connection problems may still see a status you deleted, which explains why two people can sometimes disagree about what was posted.
If you were the poster and want your own status back, check the status archive. WhatsApp says it keeps your own statuses and details such as views, likes and reactions after the 24 hours are up.
Cause 5: It is showing, but read receipts hide the views
Sometimes the status reached people and only the view count looks wrong. WhatsApp says that if you have turned off read receipts, you can't see who viewed your statuses, and you see an eye-with-a-slash icon instead. So if you see that icon, the setting is on your side and your status isn't broken.
It also says that if a contact has turned off read receipts, you can't see whether they viewed your status. A friend can therefore be missing from your viewer list even though your status reached them. Before you change anything else, ask one person whether they saw it.
- To see your viewers again, go to 'Settings', then 'Privacy', then 'Read receipts', and turn it on.
- Read receipts don't decide who can see your status. That is the audience setting in cause two.
Cause 6: Your connection or an out-of-date app
If no statuses are loading at all, the problem is probably wider than Status. The steps below are WhatsApp's general connection fixes, not ones written specifically for Status. One quick sign: a clock icon next to your messages means they aren't being delivered, which points to the connection rather than your privacy settings.
- Open a website in your browser to confirm your phone has a working connection.
- Turn airplane mode on and off to reset the connection, then restart your phone.
- Update WhatsApp to the latest version in your device's app store. WhatsApp says auto-updates are on by default, and you can check them under 'Settings', then 'App updates'.
- Check that your phone's date and time are correct.
- As a last resort, back up your chats and then uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp. Do the backup first, and don't expect a reinstall to change anyone's privacy list.
Prevent it next time
Most missing statuses come from a setting changed long ago and forgotten, so a small routine helps.
- If a status matters to someone, make sure you have each saved the other's number before you rely on it.
- Review your 'My contacts except...' or 'Only share with...' list now and then, and glance at the audience before posting something important.
- Mention the one or two people who must see it, since WhatsApp lets mentioned people see the status even if they are outside your audience.
- Remember the 24-hour window. For anything people need to find later, such as an address or a deadline, send it in a chat as well.
- Keep auto-updates switched on so you aren't troubleshooting an old version.
If you use Status to reach customers
Status only reaches people who have your number, and it is gone in a day, so it won't help a new customer find you. A free OneSol page gives customers a link to reach you on WhatsApp and elsewhere, and it can collect emails, so you can stay in touch with people who haven't saved your number.
