You paste a link into a WhatsApp chat and it doesn’t look the way it should. It might go as bare blue text with no picture and no title, or show a small square thumbnail instead of the big card you expected. Sometimes it shows the old photo and headline from before you updated the page.
There are four usual causes: the preview setting on the sender’s phone, missing or broken Open Graph tags on the page, WhatsApp not being able to read the page, or an old preview being shown. Some are fixed in WhatsApp in a few seconds. Others can only be fixed by whoever runs the website. The fix depends on which one you have.
Tell which case you’re in
Before changing anything, paste the same link into a new message, don’t send it, and watch the area above the message box for about ten seconds. That is the test Meta itself gives in its WhatsApp link preview documentation. What you see tells you where to look.
- No link gets a preview, even big sites like news articles: it is probably your WhatsApp setting. Start with the privacy setting below.
- Other links preview fine but this one never does: the page is probably missing Open Graph tags, or WhatsApp can’t read it.
- A preview appears, but only small instead of the large card: Meta says to check the image requirements.
- The preview appears but shows the old image or title: you are seeing an earlier preview. See the section on old previews.
- The preview shows while you compose, but the sent message has none: you probably sent it before the preview finished loading.
Check WhatsApp’s ‘Disable link previews’ setting
WhatsApp’s help centre lists ‘disable link previews’ among the Advanced privacy settings, next to protecting your IP address in calls and blocking high volumes of messages from unknown accounts. WhatsApp’s help pages put these Advanced options under Settings > Privacy > Advanced.
Open that screen and look at the link preview toggle. If previews are turned off there, turn them back on and paste the link into a new message. Labels can differ slightly between versions and between Android, iPhone and WhatsApp on the web or desktop, but in each case the option is in the privacy section of Settings.
Some people turn this on deliberately. A preview means the page gets fetched so WhatsApp can build the card, and that is why the option sits in the privacy section. If you leave it on, your links still work, they just go without a card.
Paste the full link and wait for the preview before sending
The preview is built while you are writing the message, not after you send it. Meta’s steps are: compose the message with the link, wait for the preview to appear above the composer, and send only once it has appeared. If you tap send straight after pasting, the message can go as a plain link.
Two smaller things also matter. Meta’s WhatsApp Cloud API docs say URLs must begin with http:// or https:// for a preview, and that if a message has several URLs only the first one gets a preview. They are written for businesses sending through the API, but they are a good rule in the app too. Paste the full address, including https://, instead of typing a short version like example.com, and put the link you want previewed first.
If it’s your page: add the Open Graph tags WhatsApp reads
WhatsApp builds the card from Open Graph tags, which are <meta> tags in the page’s <head>. They are written like <meta property="og:title" content="…" />, as described in the Open Graph protocol at ogp.me. Meta’s WhatsApp link preview page lists the tags it reads and what each one needs:
- og:title: the title of the content, without your branding. WhatsApp shows it in bold, on up to two lines. It must not be empty.
- og:description: a short description shown in smaller text. Meta says about 80 characters is enough. It must not be empty.
- og:url: the page’s canonical URL, without session variables, user-identifying parameters or counters. It must not be empty.
- og:image: an absolute URL (the full https:// address, not a relative path like /images/cover.jpg) to an image under 600KB, at least 300px wide, with an aspect ratio of 4:1 or less.
- The <head> that holds these tags must appear within the first 300KB of the page’s HTML. The rest of the page can be longer.
Small preview instead of the large one
If you get a small card, Meta’s docs point you to the image. Check that the og:image file is under 600KB, at least 300px wide and no wider than four times its height. Big uncompressed photos straight from a camera or design tool often go over the size limit, so export a compressed copy and point og:image at that.
Meta also says WhatsApp may relax the requirements, look for other HTML mark-up, or fall back to a small link preview. It warns that this behaviour isn’t guaranteed and shouldn’t be relied on. So a page without proper tags may sometimes still get a small card, but don’t count on it. The tags are the fix.
When WhatsApp can’t read the page at all
Meta’s docs say WhatsApp fetches the page with an ordinary HTTP GET request, with a User-Agent that starts with WhatsApp/ and ends with a letter for Android, iOS or web. It can only build a preview from what that request gets back. If the page needs a login, sits behind a cookie wall or bot check that blocks unknown visitors, or returns an error, there are no tags to read and no preview.
If you run the site and previews fail while the tags look right, check that requests with a WhatsApp User-Agent get the real page and not a challenge or error. That is the job of your hosting, firewall or CDN settings. Also check that the tags are in the HTML the server sends, not added later by JavaScript in the browser.
WhatsApp shows an old image or title
WhatsApp’s developer documentation doesn’t say how long previews are kept, so nobody can honestly give you an official number of hours to wait. Two things are certain. A message that has already been sent keeps the preview it was sent with, so it won’t change to match your new page. To see your update, compose a fresh message with the link.
For Facebook, Meta’s sharing docs say images are cached based on their URL and won’t be updated unless the URL changes. The same idea is the safest bet for WhatsApp: when you replace a preview image, upload it under a new file name and update og:image to point at it, instead of overwriting the old file at the same address. Meta’s Sharing Debugger refreshes what Facebook has stored for a page, but Meta doesn’t document it as clearing WhatsApp previews.
If it isn’t your website
If you are sharing someone else’s page, such as an article, a product on another store or a booking page, you can’t change its tags. Only the site owner can. The link itself still works. A missing preview doesn’t stop anyone tapping it.
To make it clearer, write a line of your own explaining what the link is, or send a screenshot of the page and the link together. If the page is your own shop or profile hosted on a platform, contact that platform’s support and ask them to check the og:title, og:description and og:image tags for your page, and quote Meta’s requirements above.
If you received a link with no preview, there is nothing on your phone that will make the sender’s message show one. Tap the link if you trust the sender, or ask them what it is.
A page that previews properly
If what you share most is your own profile or shop, it helps to have one page you control. OneSol gives you a free page with one link for all your profiles, plus digital business cards with a QR code, forms that don’t make people sign in, and Send for sharing files by link up to 5 GB. That way the link you paste into WhatsApp is always the same address, and it’s yours to keep up to date.
