Instagram Link Sticker Not Showing? Every Real Cause and Fix

Link sticker missing from your Story tray, or viewers can’t tap it? Work through the real causes in order, from an outdated app to account restrictions, and get your Story link working again.

A phone showing a grid of app icons

You open the sticker tray, you scroll, and there’s no Link sticker. Or it’s there, you post the Story, and people say tapping it does nothing. Either way you have something to share and the button won’t help you share it.

The fix is almost always one of a small set of causes. Work through them in this order, quickest first: update the app, search the sticker tray properly, check whether your account is new or restricted, check the link itself, then check where the sticker sits on the screen. Most people are sorted by step two or three.

First, what Instagram actually says about the Link sticker

A lot of advice online is out of date, so it’s worth starting with Meta’s own words. In October 2021 Instagram replaced the old “swipe up” link and opened the Link sticker to all accounts. Before that it was limited to verified accounts and accounts above a follower count. That limit is gone.

The same announcement names exactly who doesn’t get it: “new accounts and accounts that repeatedly share things like hate speech and misinformation” or other content that goes against the Community Guidelines. Instagram doesn’t publish how old an account has to be or how many followers you need. If a blog quotes you a precise number of days or followers, it’s guessing.

Instagram’s stickers help page adds two more relevant notes: if you aren’t seeing certain stickers, update the app to the latest version, and “not all stickers are available to everyone.” Keep that second line in mind if you reach the end of this list.

1. Your Instagram app is out of date

How to recognise it: the sticker tray looks different from screenshots you’ve seen, other new stickers are missing too, or the Link sticker vanished after a phone change or a long gap without updates.

The fix: open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android), search for Instagram and tap Update if it’s offered. Then close Instagram fully, swiping it away from your recent apps, and reopen it. This is the first thing Instagram’s own help center tells you to try when a sticker is missing, and it costs you a minute.

If there’s no update and the sticker is still missing, log out and back in once. That refreshes the features your account is served without changing anything else.

2. The sticker is there, you just can’t see it in the tray

How to recognise it: you’re scrolling a crowded tray of GIFs, music and poll stickers and never spotting Link.

The fix: start a Story, add your photo or video, and tap the Stickers icon at the top of the screen (the square smiley face). At the top of the tray there’s a search bar. Type “link”. If the sticker exists for your account it will appear. Tap it, paste your web address into the URL field, and tap Done. Instagram also gives you a See Preview option under the link, so you can check what people will see when they open it.

One more trap: stickers live in the Story editor, not in the regular post or Reel caption. If you’re trying to add a clickable link to a feed post caption, that isn’t supported. Captions don’t make links clickable, which is why people send followers to the link in their bio.

3. Your account is new or has a restriction

How to recognise it: the app is up to date, searching “link” in the tray finds nothing, and either your account is recent or you’ve had a post, Story or comment removed in the past.

The fix: check Account Status, which is where Instagram shows features you’ve lost. Go to your profile, tap the menu (three lines) to open Settings, scroll to More info and support, and tap Account Status. Look at Features you can’t use and Removed content. Instagram says this screen shows features you can no longer use and lets you take action to fix it, including requesting a review if you think content was removed by mistake.

If the problem is a removed post that you believe was fine, request a review from there. If the account is simply new, there isn’t a published waiting period. Use the account normally, post consistently, avoid anything that could be reported, and check the tray again over the following weeks. Don’t create a second fresh account to get around it: a new account is exactly the kind Instagram says won’t have the sticker.

4. The link you’re adding is blocked or broken

How to recognise it: the Link sticker appears, but Instagram rejects the address with an error, or the sticker posts fine and viewers land on an error page.

The fix: paste the address into your phone’s browser first and make sure it loads. Use the full address, starting with https://. Strip any extra spaces or characters that came along when you copied it.

If Instagram refuses one specific link but accepts others, the problem is the destination, not your account. Instagram limits links it judges harmful or against its guidelines, and some link shorteners and redirect chains are treated with suspicion because spammers use them to hide where a link really goes. Try linking directly to the real page instead of a shortened or redirected version. If your own site is the one being refused, make sure it isn’t compromised or flagged as unsafe by browsers.

5. The sticker posts, but viewers can’t tap it

How to recognise it: you can see the sticker, but friends say tapping it skips to the next Story, opens the reply bar, or does nothing.

The fix is usually position. The top of a Story is covered by your name, the progress bars and the close button. The bottom is covered by the reply field and the share and like buttons. A sticker sitting under those zones is hard or impossible to tap. Meta’s own guidance for Story ads tells advertisers to keep roughly the top 14% and bottom 20% of the screen clear for exactly this reason. That advice is written for ads, but the same buttons sit over organic Stories, so move your Link sticker toward the middle.

Also check that nothing sits on top of it: a GIF, a text box or another sticker layered over the link will catch the tap first. And make the sticker big enough to hit with a thumb. Pinch to resize it before you post.

Then test it yourself. Open your posted Story from your profile and tap the sticker. If it opens the page for you, the link works. Viewers who still can’t open it may be on an old version of the app, and the update advice in step 1 applies to them too.

Common myths: video Stories, Close Friends and account type

Video Stories: Instagram’s instructions say to capture or upload content and then add the sticker. They don’t limit it to photos, and the Link sticker works on video Stories as well. If it seems missing only on videos, go back to steps 1 and 2.

Close Friends: Instagram’s stickers help page says anyone who can see your Story can tap the sticker to visit the link. Meta doesn’t document any rule that blocks links on Close Friends Stories, so if it fails there, the cause is one of the ones above, not the audience setting.

Personal vs professional account: you don’t need to switch to a business or creator account to get the Link sticker. Meta opened it to all accounts. Switching won’t fix a restriction, and switching back and forth won’t speed up access on a new account.

Ads: link stickers only work in organic Stories. If you boost a Story or run it as an ad, Meta uses its own call-to-action button instead, and Meta says you can’t create partnership ads from Stories that include an organic link sticker.

How link taps are counted

If the sticker works but you’re not sure anyone is using it, check Story insights. Instagram’s help center says the Interactions metric includes sticker taps and link taps, and Profile activity covers actions like profile visits, follows and website clicks.

Two things to know. You need a public account, personal or professional, to see Story insights. And although the Story itself disappears after 24 hours, Instagram keeps its insights for up to two years, so you can compare which Stories actually sent people to your link.

If insights show plenty of views but very few link taps, that’s usually a design problem, not a bug. Say what’s behind the link in the Story itself, and use the sticker’s custom text option to replace the default label with an action word like “Shop”, “Book” or “Read”.

If nothing works

If the app is updated, “link” finds nothing in the tray, and Account Status shows no restrictions, report it to Instagram. Shake your phone while the app is open (or go to Settings → Help → Report a problem) and describe what’s happening with a screenshot of your sticker tray. Some features reach accounts gradually, and Instagram says plainly that not every sticker is available to everyone.

In the meantime you still have a way to send people somewhere: the link in your bio. Add a line to your Story such as “Link in bio” and tag your own username so viewers can jump to your profile in one tap.

It also helps to stop changing the destination every time. If your Story sticker and your bio both point at one stable link-in-bio page, such as onesol.io/yourname, you update that one page when you have something new, and every old Story and your bio still lead somewhere current. It won’t bring back a missing sticker, but it means that once the sticker works again, you only set it up once.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the link sticker not showing on my Instagram Story?

The most common reasons are an outdated Instagram app, a new account, or a restriction on your account. Instagram says new accounts and accounts that repeatedly share content against its Community Guidelines don’t get the Link sticker. Update the app, search “link” in the sticker tray, then check Settings → Account Status → Features you can’t use.

Do I need 10,000 followers to add a link to an Instagram Story?

No. The 10,000-follower and verified-only rule ended in October 2021, when Instagram opened the Link sticker to all accounts. Meta doesn’t publish any follower minimum today. It does say new accounts and accounts with repeated Community Guidelines violations won’t have access to the sticker.

Do I need a business or creator account to use the Instagram link sticker?

No. Instagram’s announcement opened the Link sticker to all accounts, personal ones included. A public account does help if you want to measure results, because Instagram says you need a public personal or professional account to see Story insights, which count link taps.

Why can’t people tap the link sticker on my Instagram Story?

Usually the sticker sits where Instagram’s own buttons cover it, near the very top or bottom of the screen, or the link itself is broken or blocked. Move the sticker toward the middle of the Story, open the link yourself from the posted Story to test it, and use a full https address.

How do I see how many people tapped my Instagram Story link?

Open Story insights. Instagram’s help center says the Interactions metric includes sticker taps and link taps, and you can see insights for up to two years after a Story is posted. You need a public account (personal or professional) to see Story insights.
