How to get your first testimonial

Proof is a chicken-and-egg problem: you need sales to get testimonials and testimonials to get sales. Here's how to break the loop.

A portrait of a person in a suit

Before anyone's bought, you have no proof — and the lack of proof is part of why nobody's bought. It feels like a trap. It isn't. You can gather your first testimonials without waiting for a wave of paying customers to appear.

Ways to break the loop

  • Give it free to a few ideal people in exchange for honest feedback.
  • Ask past clients or colleagues who've seen your work to vouch for it.
  • Turn a genuine thank-you message you already received into a quote, with permission.

Ask specifically

Don't ask 'was it good?' — you'll get 'yes'. Ask what problem it solved and what nearly stopped them buying. Those answers become the testimonials that actually persuade the next person, because they speak to real doubts.
