The free-versus-paid argument usually gets framed as a moral one — sellouts versus purists. It's really just a question of what a given piece of work is for. Some things exist to grow the audience; some exist to earn. Trouble starts when you confuse the two.
Give it away when
- It builds trust — a taste of your thinking that makes the paid thing believable.
- It travels — something people share, which does your reach for you.
- It's the top of the ladder — the first easy step toward a paid next step.
Charge when
- It saves real time or money — the value is concrete and the buyer can feel it.
- It's the complete version — the full system behind the free glimpse.
- It costs you to deliver — your time, especially. Free time is the fastest road to burnout.
The ladder, not the wall
The healthiest setup isn't free or paid — it's a ladder. Free work earns attention and trust; paid work converts it. Each rung makes the next one easier, and nobody feels tricked because the free thing was genuinely good on its own.
