Start an email list before you have anything to sell

Followers are borrowed from a platform that can change the rules tomorrow. An email list is the one audience you actually own.

An email inbox open on a computer screen

Every follower you have is rented. The platform decides who sees your posts, when, and whether they see them at all. Change the algorithm and your reach can halve overnight, and there is nothing you can do about it.

Email is the exception. A person who gives you their address is reachable directly, forever, with no middle layer deciding whether the message lands. That is why the boring advice — start a list — has never stopped being right.

You don't need a product first

The mistake is waiting until you have something to sell. Start collecting addresses now, with a reason to sign up that costs you nothing: early access, a small free resource, or simply 'I'll tell you when it's ready'.

  • A short form with one field — email — outperforms a long one every time.
  • Say what they'll get and how often. 'One email when I launch' converts better than 'subscribe'.
  • Send something within a week, even if it's just a hello. A list you never email forgets you.

Own the connection

When you finally do launch, the difference between a list and a follower count is stark. One is a group of people who chose to hear from you and will actually see the message. The other is a number you hope the algorithm shows up for.
